ATV Insurance Solutions: What it Covers

Third-Party Liability

Third-Party Liability

Third-party liability is mandatory in Quebec, for any driver who takes their vehicle on public roads. If you are wondering what liability covers, it will cover you if you unintentionally injure someone, whether it be a pedestrian, another driver, passenger and so on. It will also cover any damages you may cause to someone else’s property. All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) are not exempt from having this coverage, they must be insured with the minimum requirement of the province, which is 1 000 000. If you ask our experts, they will encourage and advise you that the minimum may not be enough, they will always make sure you are covered properly so you can rest easy.

Comprehensive & Collision

Comprehensive & Collision

Like any other vehicle insurance, comprehensive and collision coverage are optional protections to include on your policy, unless you have an additional interest (finance company or leasing company) on the ATV. Collision will cover the cost of reparation, (minus the deductible) should you be in a responsible accident. Comprehensive coverage will cover your ATV up to its actual value following the event of a fire, theft, vandalism, flood or a collision with an object or animal.

Accident Benefits

Depending on the provider, you may have personal insurance to protect you and your family from the financial consequences that could ensue from injury in an accident or your unexpected death as a result of an insurable incident.

Is ATV insurance required?

Insuring your ATV is mandatory if you plan on operating it off of private property and on public roads. Although it isn’t mandatory to plate the offroad ATVs, it is in your best interest to have the minimum requirement to protect yourself from any unforeseen events. Moreover, if you operate your ATV on public roads, you will be required to carry ATV insurance as it is a motorized vehicle (similar to insurance for your car!)

Types of Insurance for ATVs & Recreational Vehicles

Claims unfortunately happen, we don’t wish them to happen but they are out of our control. In the event you ever are required to make a claim, it is always a good idea to know what coverages your ATV has. You will notice that your car insurance and recreational insurance are very similar. See below for an example of some of the coverage that may be included with standard ATV insurance and several options that could be available for purchase, depending on your exact provider and circumstances. ATV Insurance in Quebec: Frequently Asked Questions

A: Your homeowners’ insurance will likely not cover an ATV, 4-wheeler, snowmobile, dirt bike, or any similar motorized vehicle if it is stolen, even if the ATV was situated in your garage. ATV vehicles that are operated on public roads or require registration must be insured under a separate policy. Items such as lawnmowers, bikes etc that are used to service your own property and are not “driven” can be insured by your homeowners’ policy.

A: It depends on your policy and provider, in addition to the type of water damage. Water damage due to unexpected causes, such as flooding, or if your ATV is accidentally driven into a body of water and swamped, may be covered. However, if your ATV is stored in your garage and unmaintained pipes were to leak or burst, causing damage, this may not be covered. Discuss with your ATV insurance broker about what is and what is not covered by your ATV insurance.

A: The cost of ATV insurance will vary from policy to policy due to factors such as where you live, your driving history, your insurance history, the make and model of your ATV, etc. ATV insurance can range immensely in cost depending on coverage options as well, starting at as little as a few hundred a year to a thousand or more.

A: LMBF can help you find the best ATV insurance company with the lowest ATV insurance rates. While “cheap” isn’t a word we like to use - (cheap can sometimes mean cutting corners!) - we believe we can find you an affordable option from our insurance partners that matches your ATV insurance needs. If you need any tips on saving, discuss with an LMBF insurance broker.

A: If you only use your ATV on private property, you may be able to operate it without insurance or registration. That being said, it is still highly recommended you carry some level of liability insurance to protect yourself in the event someone is injured due to you operating the ATV. If you operate your ATV on public roads, land, or property, you are required to have insurance.

A: Again, the answer depends on your exact needs. It is recommended you carry a base of liability insurance that covers accidental bodily injury and property damage. Your broker may have some guidelines for how much you should carry. Medical payments, collision, comprehensive, unit you may wish to include those with your ATV insurance for fuller insured/underinsured motorist coverage are all optional, bu coverage. As always, an LMBF broker is willing to discuss your needs with you!
